The study, which appeared on-line July 27 in the journal Health Affairs, was released in conjunction with the C.D.C.'s Weight of the Nation conference July 27-29 in Washington. The study, "Annual Medical Spending Attributable to Obesity: Payer- and Service-Specific Estimates," found the proportion of all annual medical costs that are due to obesity increased to 9% in 2006, up 37% from 6.5% in 1998. Cap-and-trade concept takes center stage Senate committee debates the impact of the program on agriculture WASHINGTON - The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry plunged into the climate change debate taking testimony from administration officials and representatives of farm organizations during a July 22 hearing on the role of agriculture in global warming legislation. Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, opened the hearing stating, "We need to drastically increase efficiency throughout our energy economy, and we need to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to energy derived from domestic renewable energy resources.
