Starbucks, Danone
form global venture
SEATTLE — The Starbucks Coffee Co.
and Paris-based global dairy giant Danone have entered into an agreement to
develop a line of Greek yogurt products
that will be sold in Starbucks stores and
the grocery channel in the United States,
and, eventually, globally.
The product line, which will be sold
under the brand name Evolution Fresh,
Inspired by Dannon, will be ready-to-eat
parfait Greek yogurt products. Starbucks
will offer the products in participating
stores in the spring of 2014, and Danone
will start distributing the products to
U.S. retailers in 2015. Starbucks said a

have been a weak link in the General Mills Inc. Meal Division, Julianna L. Chugg, senior vice-president of
the division, said the category was poised
for renewed growth at the company. A
greater focus on its traditional Helper line
of dry dinners will be pivotal in the improvement, she said.
Ms. Chugg spoke July 9 at the Fiscal
2014 General Mills Investor Day at the
New York Stock Exchange.

on revitalizing frozen foods
KANSAS CITY — Bob Waldron, president
of the Schwan Food Co.’s Consumer Brands
business, is intent on bringing consumers
back to the frozen food aisle. With a portfolio of leading frozen pizza, pies and Asian
appetizer products sold under brands such
as Freschetta, Red Baron, Tony’s, Edwards

and Pagoda Express, Mr. Waldron seeks to
reinvigorate a category that has struggled
during the past few years.
“Getting the products right is one way
to bring more people back to the frozen
food aisle,” he said in an interview with
Food Business News. “There have been a
lot of new products in the category, but
they tend to have been replacement innovations; they have not gained traction
with consumers.
“There is a lot of flavor variety, a lot of
crust variety, but it’s replacement innovation and has created a lot of churn on the
shelf. It did not drive the category at the
shelf and as a result some of our core products lost distribution.
