FrieslandCampina taps into clean
label trends with new native protein
FrieslandCampina DMV is expanding
its portfolio of performance nutrition
solutions with Nutri Whey Native, a premium native protein derived from milk.
The offering is a response to the recent
clean label shift in the sports and lifestyle
nutrition market, the company said.
"Consumers around the world are
seeking more natural and less processed
food and supplements with proven
health benefits," said Benjamin Maclean,
product group manager at FrieslandCampina. "This trend is observed in the
sports nutrition space, and at the same
time, there is a fast-growing lifestyle
'active consumers' segment interested
in nutrition and healthy living. Convergence of these segments has created
market potential for protein enriched
nutrition products with a natural positioning, targeting both serious athletes
and new mainstream consumers looking
to fuel a more active lifestyle."
To develop Nutri Whey Native,
FrieslandCampina conducted consumer
research in the United States and the
United Kingdom focused on understanding the needs of active millennials.
"We discovered that naturalness
of ingredients is an important value that
is increasingly seen as a necessity,"

Mr. Maclean said. "Offering more natural

can create exciting opportunities for our
customers to engage new audiences and
grow their businesses."
Nutri Whey Native is derived directly from fresh raw milk with minimal
processing. It is purified using ceramic
micro-filtration, which preserves the
native proteins found in milk, FrieslandCampina said, and results in a protein
content of 80%. The protein provides a

"It is easy to incorporate into a

"We have already seen the uplift
in production from this expansion,"
said Bryce Nesberg, human resources
manager at Kerry's Rochester facility.
"Each week, our products leave the
plant with delivery labels across North
America and around the world. The
increased production capacity means
we will add more skilled and scientific
roles to our existing employee base of
125 people in the Rochester area."
Kerry broke ground on the expansion in April and held a ribbon-cutting
ceremony at the facility on June 27.
Cold Jet, a Loveland, Ohio-based
developer of dry ice cleaning solutions,
will be providing dry ice cleaning
demonstrations at IFT18. The demos
will include Cold Jet's i³ MicroClean,
which showcases the dry ice blasting
technology, a non-abrasive cleaning
method that helps facilities clean without water.
The i³ MicroClean, designed around
Cold Jet's patented shaved dry ice technology, allows the cleaning of small spaces that other methods cannot typically
reach, Cold Jet said. The dry ice is food
grade quality and may decontaminate
surfaces of bacteria such as Salmonella, E.
coli and Listeria.
"The MicroClean system extends the
life of equipment by eliminating the need
for chemicals, wire brushes and abrasive
pads," Cold Jet said.
