Bakery Flour
Bookings of bakery flour were
limited last week. Prices were lowered
with steep declines in wheat futures a
consideration.
Wheat futures again set new contract
lows. Bakers' coverage of the futures component of forward flour contracts already
was extensive, so the continuing slump
in wheat futures didn't elicit a significant
increase in activity last week. Still, as
futures continued to log new lows, millers
cautioned that the market may become
oversold, making it susceptible to upward
corrections, especially in the event of a
weather problem with the U.S. crop. Additional forward coverage in futures may
be advisable, the millers said.
Individual specialty bread bakers who already covered Minneapolis
spring wheat futures through the second
quarter seemed poised to price basis and
millfeed credits to complete bookings for
the period and even for July-September.

week were distributors who booked supply only a couple of weeks forward and for
whom the slump in futures was a boon.
One miller indicated his customer
base was 100% covered through June,
in all flour grades. For the third quarter,
pan bread flour coverage was estimated
at 50% and spring grade and soft flour
coverage at 30%. October-December
coverage was estimated at 25% for pan
bread flour, 10% for spring grades and
5% for soft flour.
Mill grind averaged about five days
across most regions last week, a rebound
from reduced operations during Easter
week but still far from robust. FBN

This Easter season saw fairly aggressive store shelf pricing in certain markets
with flour often presented as a "loss
leader" to encourage consumers to buy
not only flour but other baking ingredients. Pricing since the holiday became
more routine with 5-lb bags of national
and regional brands at about $2.50 a bag.
In the market for private label flour,
most mass merchandisers, club stores
and grocery chains earlier covered their
flour needs through July with some coverage extending into September. FBN

Semolina
Bookings of semolina, durum flour
and granulars were light last week. Price
adjustments were minor.
The price of choice milling hard
amber durum as quoted at the Chicago
rail gateway for delivery beyond was a
nominal $7.25 a bu, down 5c from the previous week and compared with $8.25 a bu
a year ago. The Minneapolis price dipped
below $7 and was quoted at a nominal
$6.95 a bu.
Pasta manufacturers were comfortable with their semolina coverage. One
durum miller estimated pasta manufacturers have covered about 90% of their
April-June semolina needs. Third-quarter coverage was estimated at 80%, and
fourth-quarter coverage at about 45%.
Statistics Canada on April 24 indicated Canadian farmers intend to plant
5,021,000 acres to durum in 2019, down
19% from 2018 and compared with 5.2
million acres as the average of pre-report
trade expectations.
The U.S.D.A field office in Arizona
indicated that state's durum crop was
89% headed by April 21 compared with
72% a week earlier and 58% as the recent
five-year average for the date. Twelve per
cent of the crop was mature versus 4% a
week earlier and 19% a year ago.
The U.S.D.A. rated the condition
of the 2019 Arizona durum crop at 94%
good to excellent compared with 93%
a week earlier and 91% as the five-year
average.
Planting was yet to begin in North
Dakota. The U.S.D.A. indicated according
to a survey of producers, field work in the
state will begin April 29, on average. FBN
