Nuts
Peanut planting was just underway in the eight major states with 2%
of the crop in the ground as of April 21
compared with 3% both last year and as
the 2014-18 average for the date, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture said in its
Crop Progress report. Planting was 13%
completed in Florida and 1% in both Alabama and Georgia with other states not
yet started. On March 29 the U.S.D.A. said
farmers intend to plant 1,449,000 acres to
peanuts in 2019, up 1.65% from 2018.
Shelled pecan stocks in cold storage
totaled 65,270,000 lbs, up 26% from a
year earlier and record high for the date,
the U.S.D.A. said. FBN

the U.S.D.A. said in its latest Cattle on
Feed report. March marketings were
1,777,000 head, down 3.4% from March
2018, and cattle placed in feedlots during
March totaled 2,014,000 head, up 4.8%.
U.S. pork production again was record
high for the month with March outturn at
2,297.2 million lbs, up 400,000 lbs from a
year ago, the U.S.D.A. said in its Livestock
Slaughter report. March beef production
was 2,117.7 million lbs, down 3.9%.
Stocks of frozen beef on March 31 were
450,657,000 lbs, down 2.9% from a year
earlier, while frozen pork stocks totaled
610,129,000 lbs, down 0.1%, the U.S.D.A.
said in its latest Cold Storage report.
The U.S.D.A. beef cutout value slipped
last week but was up for the two-week
period and was up 6% from a year ago
on continued good domestic and export
demand and the approach of the grilling
season, which usually boosts demand.
The U.S.D.A. pork cutout value hit
$87.07 per cwt on April 23, a 20-month
high, before pulling back at midweek but
still up 23% from a year ago. Prices had
been driven higher by hopes for increased
pork exports to China amid widespread
African swine fever in that country while
ample supplies added pressure.
Total frozen poultry stocks on March
31 were 1,317 million lbs, down 1.6% from
a year earlier, including frozen chicken
at 846 million lbs, down 3%, and frozen

turkey at 467 million lbs, up 0.9%. FBN

Dry Edible Beans
Dealer prices reported by the U.S.D.A.
for dry beans were mixed the past two
weeks with great northern beans steady,
black beans mixed, pinto beans steady
to 50c a cwt lower, and dark red kidney
and navy beans steady to $1 a cwt higher,
although navy beans in North Dakota and
Minnesota were $6 a cwt lower from the
most recent quote in late March. Trading
was slow amid light demand.
Statistics Canada said Canadian
farmers intend to plant 8% fewer dry edible beans, 25% fewer chickpeas and 10%
fewer lentils in 2019 than in 2018. FBN

Processing apple values were steady
with a firmer tone in Michigan and the
East for juice apples. Trade was moderate
to active in regions still running apples.
March 31 stocks of frozen orange juice
concentrate totaled 704,400,000 lbs, up
25% from a year earlier, the U.S.D.A. said.
April 1 potato stocks in the 13 major
fall storage states totaled 143,140,000
cwts, up 3.1% from a year earlier and equal
to 34% of production, the U.S.D.A. said.
Frozen french fry stocks on March 31
were 1,038 million lbs, up 8% from a year
earlier, the U.S.D.A. said. FBN
