HARD WINTER. Premiums on hard
red winter wheat in Kansas City were
7c a bu higher to 2c lower last week.
Adjustments were confined to the lower
third of the protein scale, and the basis
was steady and flat at 160@170c over
the Kansas City September future from
12.6% protein through 14%.
Limited business in to-arrive wheat
continued. Mill demand for cash wheat
was light in consideration of the large
volume of application to contracts
received and being loaded at country
elevators. Most South Dakota hard red
winter supplies continued to be funneled
east across the Chicago gateway.
The U.S .Department of Agriculture
in its Aug. 12 Crop Production report
estimated the 2019 hard red winter wheat
crop at 839,834,000 bus, up 35,357,000 bus,
or 4%, from its July estimate and up 27%
from 662,249,000 bus in 2018. The U.S.D.A.
forecast 2019-20 ending stocks for U.S. hard
red winter wheat at 452 million bus, up 26
million bus, or 6%, from its July forecast as
a bump in production and lower domestic
use more than offset higher exports.
The U.S.D.A. indicated winter wheat
was 96% harvested in Colorado by Aug.
11 (99% as the recent five-year average for
the date), 90% in Nebraska (99%), 68% in
South Dakota (90%) and 50% in Montana
(80%). Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas
harvests were completed earlier.
Plains Grains, Inc., in its weekly harvest summary issued Aug. 16, indicated, on
the basis of 408 of 500 intended samples, the
average protein of the 2019 hard red winter
wheat crop was running at 11.2% compared
with 12.3% as the 2018 crop average. Test
weight was averaging 60.4 lbs per bu compared with 61.1 lbs in 2018. Falling number
was averaging 377 seconds, up slightly from
the previous week and compared with 371
seconds last year. The average grade of the
samples was No. 1 hard red winter, the same
as the 2018 crop average.
Salina spot wheat bids were 15c
under K.C. Sept. Hutchinson spot wheat
bids were 10c under K.C. Sept. Wichita
elevator bids were 5c under K.C. Sept.
Gulf bids on 12%-protein hard red winter
for nearby were 165c over K.C. Sept.
HARD SPRING. Premiums on hard red
August 20, 2019

spring wheat were 25c a bu higher to 10c
lower last week. Wheat movement was
slowed by futures price slides. Mills had
adequate pipelines and were content to
await indications of new crop quality.
The U.S.D.A. forecast the hard
spring wheat crop at 565,753,000 bus, up
23,938,000 bus, or 4%, from the July projection, but down 4% from 587,007,000 bus in
2018. The 2020 carryover of hard red spring
wheat was forecast at 322 million bus,
down 1 million from July, as a 22-million-bu
increase in domestic use more than offset a
21-million-bu decrease in total supply. That
implied lower imports, since production
was up 24 million bus.
The U.S.D.A. said the spring wheat
harvest was 8% completed by Aug.
11 compared with 32% a year ago and
30% as the 2014-18 average for the date.
Harvesting was 5% completed in North
Dakota (23% as the average), 8% in Minnesota (33%), 10% in Montana (26%),
15% in Idaho (32%), 16% in South Dakota
(61%) and 18% in Washington (48%).
Spring wheat conditions declined
overall in the week ended Aug. 11. The
U.S.D.A. rated spring wheat in the six

soft red winter wheat crop at 257,489,000
bus, down 1,684,000 bus, or 0.7%, from
July and down 10% from the 2018 outturn of 285,558,000 bus. The 2019 soft
red winter carryover was lowered from
July by 7 million bus, or 6%, to 118 million bus based on lower production and a
5-million-bu increase in exports.
St. Louis-area mill bids were 40c
over Chicago Sept. Toledo mill bids for
nearby were 20c over Chicago Sept.;
Elevator bids for nearby were 20c over
Chicago Sept. Cincinnati elevator bid was
10c under Chicago Sept. Michigan white
wheat mill bids were 35@40c over Chicago Sept.; soft red wheat mill bids were
25@30c over Sept. Gulf bids on soft red
winter for nearby were 65c over Sept. FBN
