Soy Products
Bookings of soy flour expanded last
week. Prices declined with lower soybean meal futures a consideration.
Most business was completed before
the release on Aug. 12 of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's highly anticipated
August Crop Production report. Soy
flour millers were reluctant to offer additional supply into 2020 in the wake of
the report until they have a better idea
of what it will take to pry supply loose
from farmers' hands given prospects of a
smaller crop.
Soybean meal and soybean futures
declined last week, pulled lower by
tumbling corn futures. The highly anticipated August crop report was supportive
to the soy complex with the U.S.D.A.
issuing a soybean production estimate
below most expectations, but the downward tug exerted by corn futures proved
irresistible.
The U.S.D.A. in its weekly Crop
Progress report indicated 54% of the
soybeans in the 18 principal producing states were setting pods by Aug. 11
compared with 37% a week earlier and
76% as the recent five-year average for
the date. The U.S.D.A. rated the crop's
condition at 54% good to excellent, 33%
fair and 13% poor to very poor.
The U.S.D.A. indicated net export
sales of soybean cake and meal for delivery in 2018-19 during the week ended
Aug. 8 totaled 130,100 tonnes, up 41%
from the previous week and up 45% from
the prior four-week average. Net sales

Corn Products
Bookings and sales of corn meal,
corn flour and other corn products
expanded last week. Prices declined with
slumping corn futures a consideration.
Several corn meal and flour buyers
took advantage of slumping futures to
cover needs through the fourth quarter and even into January-March 2020.
Millers pointed out that for many buyers,
this was catchup business as they had
allowed coverage to narrow beyond what
was the norm for the time of year.
Corn futures tumbled in the wake of
an unexpectedly bearish outlook reflected
in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
forecast for corn production that was well
above trade expectations and an unanticipated hike in the U.S.D.A.'s corn yield forecast. The department's initial survey-based
forecast for 2019 corn production was 13.9
billion bus compared with 13.2 billion bus
as the average of pre-report trade estimates.
The U.S.D.A. indicated 39% of the
corn in the 18 leading producing states was
in the dough stage by Aug. 11 compared
with 23% a week earlier and 61% as the
five-year average for the date. The U.S.D.A.
rated the crop's condition at 57% good to
excellent, 30% fair and 13% poor to very
poor, unchanged from a week earlier.
The U.S.D.A. indicated net export
sales of corn for delivery in 2018-19 during the week ended Aug. 8 totaled 56,100

Oats
Bookings of food-grade oats flakes
were limited last week. Coverage already
was mostly solid through December.
Prices were unchanged.
Underpinning prices of oats products were tight old crop stocks in Canada.
The Manitoba harvest was just underway,
and the Manitoba crop and Saskatchewan
crop prospects were viewed as good. The
same was not true of the Alberta crop.
New crop supply will begin to replenish
stocks, but this won't be a significant
market feature for a few weeks yet. FBN

Rice
Whole-grain milled and industrial
rice business was routine last week. Most
major buyers earlier covered their needs
through September. There were discussions about new crop coverage. Activity
was similar in the case of rice flour and
extruded rice products.
Arkansas rice and rice byproduct
prices as quoted by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture were unchanged, but
prevailing world prices declined.
The rice harvest was 7% completed
by Aug. 11 compared with 9% as the fiveyear average for the date. FBN
