Dry dairy product prices mostly
were unchanged to firmer last week,
cheese values mostly advanced, and the
price of butter continued to decline.
Nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) prices were
left unchanged. High-heat N.D.M. stocks
were tight, but drying was sufficient to
fill contracts. Spot trading was limited.
Production of low/medium heat N.D.M.
was steady. Inventories were balanced to
slightly heavy with spot material available. Trading was about steady.
Dry whey prices were raised 1c a lb
amid what the U.S. Department of Agriculture called an "uncertain" market
tone with indications of weakness ahead.
Production was steady but was expected
to increase in coming weeks. Processors'
inventories were not burdensome, but
stocks in secondary markets were seen
as heavy. Export demand has suffered
from reduced shipments to Asia because
of African swine fever and trade issues.
Domestic demand was steady but not sufficient to make up for lost exports.

Amid similar circumstances, lactose
prices firmed at the bottom of the price
range but declined at the top. Exports to
Asia remained constrained, and more
product from Europe was available on the
global market. Domestic price discovery
was difficult amid mixed supply-anddemand scenarios for various brands of
lactose. Supply generally was available.
Prices of 34% whey protein concentrate were unchanged. Production was
steady but was expected to rise.
Dry buttermilk prices were unchanged but with a firm undertone in
quiet trading. Production and inventories were light. Demand from bakers and
dry mix manufacturers was beginning to
increase ahead of the fall baking season.
Cheese prices were higher except for
process-type cheese. Increased seasonal
demand was noted as schools reopened,
and the arrival of football season boosted
pizza cheese sales. Production increased
and was near capacity in some cases even
as milk supplies began to tighten due to
more fluid milk going to schools.
CME Group butter prices fell to an
18-month low as of last Thursday, down
9% from multi-month highs in midJuly. Churning increased as more cream
became available amid less demand from
the ice cream sector and more low-fat
milk going to schools. Butter demand
from schools increased, but retail orders
remained somewhat subdued. Butter
inventories were up from a year ago. FBN
