Nuts
The peanut crop in the eight major
states was rated 65% good to excellent
as of Aug. 25 compared with 66% a week
earlier and 76% a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
Peanut stocks totaled 2,421 million lbs on July 31, down 11% from a year
earlier, the U.S.D.A. said. Processors
crushed 38,666,000 lbs of peanuts for
oil, cake and meal in July, up 33% from
a year ago, with crude oil production at
18,162,000 lbs, up 37%, and July 31 oil
stocks at 10,181,000 lbs, up 10%.
Oregon's 2019 hazelnut production
was forecast at 49,000 tons, down 3.9%
from record outturn of 51,000 tons in 2018,
the U.S.D.A.'s Oregon field office said. FBN

at 2,211 million lbs, up 11% from July
2018, beef production at 2,360 million
lbs, up 6%, and total red meat production
at 4,589 million lbs, up 8%, the U.S.D.A
said in its Livestock Slaughter report.
Frozen pork stocks on July 31 totaled
602 million lbs, up 9% from a year
earlier, led by record loin supplies. Beef
stocks totaled 455 million lbs, down 6%
from last year, the U.S.D.A. said.
There were 11,112,000 cattle in feedlots of 1,000 head or more on Aug. 1, up
0.2% from a year earlier and the highest
Aug. 1 count since the data series began in
1996, the U.S.D.A. said. July cattle marketings were up 7% from July 2018, but cattle
placed on feed during July were down
2.1%, with placements also below a year
ago and the prior two months, which suggests tighter beef supplies later in the year.
Beef prices spiked in mid-August due
to uncertainty after a fire shut down the
Tyson beef processing plant in western
Kansas. The plant processes about 5,600
cattle daily, equal to about 5% of the
total U.S. slaughter. Tyson said it may be
months before the plant can be reopened.
The U.S.D.A. boxed beef value declined last week from a two-year high the
prior week as the market adjusted to the
loss of the Kansas plant and still was up
10% from a year ago. Grilling demand for
beef typically subsides after Labor Day.
The U.S.D.A. pork cutout value was
down sharply the past two weeks but

Dry Edible Beans
Dry edible bean dealer spot prices
reported by the U.S.D.A. mostly were
unquoted as the market transitioned to
new crop with harvest underway in some
areas. Pinto beans were higher in the
Upper Midwest while black beans were
mixed. Trading was slow. FBN

Produce
The U.S. Department of Commerce
on Aug. 19 initialed a draft agreement to
suspend an anti-dumping investigation
of fresh tomatoes from Mexico, which
the D.O.C. and Mexican growers may sign
after a 30-day notice period. The agreement "completely eliminates the injurious effects of Mexican tomatoes" on the
U.S. market and sets reference prices for
several types of tomatoes among other
control mechanisms, the D.O.C. said.
California growers harvested
3,976,822 tons of processing tomatoes
through Aug. 17, down 25% from the same
date a year ago, with 6,144,337 tons expected to be harvested by Aug. 31, the California
Processing Tomato Advisory Board said.

across the country, although offers to processors still were limited in most areas. FBN
