Wheat futures
Wheat futures posted mixed changes last week with Chicago and Kansas
City futures advancing while Minneapolis spring wheat futures extended their
slump, trading to the lowest levels since
mid-September and to within 10c a bu
of contract lows set in early September.
While Chicago and Kansas City wheat
futures advanced, they remained bound
by ranges that have held for weeks.
Minneapolis futures have trended
sharply lower since mid-October. Traders attributed the slump partly to poor
demand, particulary export demand, for
spring wheat compared with the other
major wheat classes. The U.S. Department of Agriculture indicated exports
and undelivered sales of hard red spring
wheat for 2019-20 through Nov. 14
totaled 157.6 million bus, down 9% from
a year ago. By contrast, hard red winter
wheat exports and undelivered sales
totaled 212.9 million bus, a nearly 40%
increase over the same span in 2018.
Export sales seemed to provide
a signal to traders that their best bet
was to go long on Kansas City futures
and sell Minneapolis, according to one
analyst.
The U.S.D.A. indicated net export
sales of all U.S. wheat for delivery in

2019-20 during the week ended Nov. 14
totaled 437,700 tonnes, up 83% from
the previous week and up 29% from the
prior four-week average.
Winter wheat futures also were
supported by a slight decline in the
U.S.D.A.'s ratings of the 2020 crop's
condition. In the 18 states that planted
90% of winter wheat acreage last year,
wheat was rated 52% good to excellent
compared with 54% a week earlier, 57%
two weeks ago and 56% a year ago.
Declining conditions were most evident in the southern Plains. The U.S.D.A.
rated winter wheat in Kansas at 47%
good to excellent, down from 51% a week
earlier. The Oklahoma crop was deemed
46% good to excellent in the latest week,
down sharply from 57% a week earlier.
Texas winter wheat was rated 30% good
to excellent, down from 36% the prior

Millfeed
Values continued to escalate in
thin pre-holiday trading. Demand
remained good as cold weather sparked
feed use at the same time as supplies
were set to tighten in the holiday

a lack of or high prices for alternative
ingredients. Some substitution was
evident but not enough to dent overall
good millfeed demand.
Traders estimated that 80% to
nearly 100% of millfeed production
already was sold through the end of the
year. Prices typically spike during the
Christmas-New Year's period as flour
mills reduce grind. But this year, prices
began rising well ahead of Thanksgiving. Mills were expected to run from
two to six days this week as all will take
Thanksgiving Day off with several planning to be down two to four days for
fumigations or maintenance.
With so much feed already sold,
prices mainly reflected the few loads
that were available and highly sought
by end users. While more normal flour
grind will resume after Thanksgiving,
some debated the upside potential of
prices with a shorter period leading to
Christmas.
Millfeed was $140 a ton in Kansas
City and $144 in Minneapolis, on a rail
basis, compared with corn at $134 and
sorghum at $114 a ton, both K.C. Corn
gluten feed was $5 lower at $175 a ton,
distillers' dried grains were steady at
$155 a ton, and dehydrated alfalfa was
steady at $300 a ton, all K.C. FBN
