Bakery Flour
Bookings of bakery flour were limited
last week. Prices were adjusted higher for
spring grades and soft flour while hard
winter-spring blend prices were lowered.
The principal constraint on significant
new business was the well-covered status
of most bakers. Sales to distributors were
steady with the aim of keeping contract balances extended two or three weeks.
There were minor additional spring
wheat basis component bookings for
the third quarter. Most of this business
involved budget buyers, many from the
restaurant sector, who sought to lock in
their late summer-early autumn menus,
a flour merchandiser said.
Futures component activity was
minimal. Many bakers took futures
coverage at earlier, lower prices, and they
employed risk-management tools when
futures prices rallied, a miller said. Bakers may extend coverage if Kansas City
hard red winter wheat futures dip back
into the $4.50-a-bu range, he said.

Many bakers locked in millfeed
credit coverage earlier at higher levels.
Those that need to add coverage held out
hope for a midds price rebound before the
slide into lower summer prices.
Millers indicated April-June flour
coverage was between 50% and 75%
for pan bread flour and between 40%
and 70% for spring grades. Soft flour
coverage lagged with bakers said to have
covered between 25% and 40% of their
flour needs for April-June. For the third
quarter, coverage of spring grades was
estimated between 20% and 40% with
pan bread flour coverage at 15% to 20%
and soft flour coverage at 5% to 10%.
Mill grind averaged 5½ days. FBN

month to restock shelves at the conclusion
of the fall baking season. Home bakers
were expected to provide the next bump in
demand ahead of Easter (April 12).
Private label flour buyers were for
the most part covered into mid-summer,
and most business consisted of orders
being applied to those contracts. Buyers
had yet to broach the subject of thirdquarter coverage. Some might "stick
their neck out" in upcoming months, a
flour manufacturer said, but most were
satisfied with current coverage levels
and pleased to avoid a potentially volatile
market in the months before harvest. FBN

Semolina
Bookings of semolina, durum flour
and granulars were light last week. Semolina prices advanced as lower millfeed prices
more than offset lower durum values.
The price of choice milling hard amber durum as quoted at the Chicago rail
gateway for delivery beyond was $8.60 a
bu, down 5c from the previous week. The
Minneapolis price was $8.30 a bu.
Durum had traded higher in late
December, but had not done so in the
new year, a durum miller said. "The bull
has to be fed every day," he said, "and the
bull hasn't been fed for a while."
Durum growers' attention remained
on other commodities, as has been the
case since December, when elevators and
farmers put together durum packages to
satisfy earlier agreements.
First-quarter semolina sales last
week were mostly composed of fill-in
orders as most pasta manufacturers had
earlier booked through March. Secondand third-quarter coverage remained
about 78% and 10%, respectively.
"I don't see the necessity for a more
aggressive stance until we get a better
feel for planting in 2020," a miller said.
As the durum market entered 2020
with lower stockpiles in reserve than a year
earlier, durum millers and pasta manufacturers were expected to closely watch
weather developments during the planting
of the 2020 crop. They'll also be looking at
soil moisture profiles, field conditions and
for clues to farmers' planting intentions.
