Wheat futures
U.S. wheat futures prices continued
to weaken last week, descending from
recent highs set in the middle of the previous week. Pressure came from a lack
of follow-through on promised Chinese
purchases, a declining U.S. dollar, faltering equity markets and other struggling
commodities.
China did not purchase U.S. wheat
last week, and there were no confirmed
purchases of that nature since a phase
one trade agreement was signed by
the two countries Jan. 15. China had
purchased 194,100 tonnes of U.S. wheat
for the 2019-20 crop year to date, and
the U.S. Department of Agricluture
continued to forecast China's purchases
of wheat from all origins this year at 3.2
million tonnes.
Amid a lengthy break for the
Chinese New Year observances, China's
attention was riveted on stemming the
spread of the deadly coronavirus. The
potential effects of coronavirus on the
global economy were felt in declining
currencies, equity markets and oil prices.
The U.S.D.A. indicated net export
sales of U.S. wheat for delivery in 2019-20
during the week ended Jan. 23 totaled
646,300 tonnes, down 7% from the
previous week but up 49% from the prior

four-week average. Sales were near the
top end of pre-report trade estimates.
Egypt last week purchased 180,000
tonnes of wheat from France, whose
offers were below those of Ukraine and
Russia. The latter country the previous
week raised the possibility of it limiting
wheat exports during the remainder of
the marketing year.
President Donald Trump on Jan. 29
signed the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade
agreement, which will take effect when
Canada signs on. The signing was lauded
by the U.S. agricultural community but
had no effect on futures trading as the
agreement already had been priced into
the market.
Some state U.S.D.A. offices released
their monthly reports for January indicating a decline in winter wheat conditions in many hard red winter states.
Kansas winter wheat was rated 34% good
to excellent, compared with 40% good to
excellent a month earlier. FBN

Millfeed
Nearby prices were mostly lower
last week as feed demand continued to
be insufficient to absorb production from
robust flour mill runtimes.

expectations, partly due to ongoing mild
weather in the nation's principal livestock
production areas since the onset of winter.
Meanwhile, many of the nation's
flour mills continued to feature lengthy
runtimes initiated in early January in
compensation for downtime taken as
employees celebrated Christmas and
New Year's Day. Flour orders from pizza
dough bakers preparing for football playoffs and the Feb. 2 Super Bowl were partly
responsible for heavy grind, a trader said,
and could tail off with the season ended.
Eastern markets saw more aggressive offers for February, and lower nearby
values exerted pressured on deferred
periods. The possibility remained for a
blast of cold weather to spur a demanddriven rally before summer, although
one trader feared "we've missed the boat"
on a big rally for first quarter.
The Central states market remained
heavy despite some mills clocking drastically lower runtimes.
Millfeed was $85 a ton in Kansas City
and $89 in Minneapolis, on a rail basis,
compared with corn at $140 a ton and
sorghum at $119 a ton, both K.C. Gluten
feed was $10 lighter at $170 a ton, distillers' dried grain was $5 lower for a second
week at $160 a ton, and dehydrated alfalfa
was steady at $300 a ton, all K.C. FBN
