Dec. 31 peanut stocks of 4,605 million lbs were down 9% from a year earlier,
the U.S. Department of Agriculture said
in its Peanut Stocks and Processing report. There were 37,236,000 lbs of shelled
peanuts crushed in December, up 4%,
with crude oil production at 16,823,000
lbs, up 3.2%. Dec. 31 crude oil stocks were
8,171,000 lbs, up 27% from a year earlier.
U.S. 2019 pecan production was estimated at 264,500,000 lbs, up 14% from
2018, in the five largest reporting states,
the U.S.D.A. said in its Pecan Production
report. The average price paid to growers
was $1.77 per lb. New Mexico was the
largest producing state, accounting for
37% of U.S. production. Production in
Georgia was down slightly from 2018 and
was down 36% from 2017 due to damage
from Hurricane Michael.

December pork and total red meat
production were record high for the
month, the U.S.D.A. said in its latest
Livestock Slaughter report, with pork up
9% from December 2018, beef up 7% and
total red meat up 8%. Slaughter numbers and average live weights were up
from a year ago for both species. For the
year, production of pork, beef and total
red meat were record high with pork at
27,637 million lbs, up 5% from 2018; beef
at 27,151 million lbs, up 1%; and total red
meat at 55,011 million lbs, up 3%.
Frozen pork stocks on Dec. 31 were
580,904,000 lbs, up 15% from a year
earlier and record high for the date, the
U.S.D.A. said in its Cold Storage report.
Frozen beef stocks were 481,012,000 lbs,
down 3%. Chicken stocks at 962,255,000
lbs were up 9% and record high.
Ample pork supplies continued to
pressure wholesale prices with the U.S.D.A.
cutout value down 9% last week and at a
10-month low but still up 5% from a year
ago. The beef cutout value rose slightly last

Midwest and at $40 to $42 a cwt in
Michigan, both up about 15% from a year
earlier. Prices paid to growers for pinto
and great northern beans were up as
much as 50% from year-ago levels with
other varieties up about 15% to 33%.
Prices paid to growers for green peas
and lentils were unchanged from two
weeks earlier and were mixed compared
with last year's values. FBN

Produce
Processing apple prices were steady
in slow to moderate trading. Offers were
heavy in Washington but light elsewhere.
Global orange production was estimated at 47,469,000 tonnes in 2019-20,
down 11% from 2018-19, due mainly to a
22% drop in Brazil, which at 15,100,000
tonnes still accounted for 32% of global
production, the U.S.D.A. said. Of the
global total, 28,657,000 tonnes were
for fresh consumption, down 5% from
2018-19, and 18,804,000 tonnes were for
processing, down 18%. The bulk of the
crops in the United States and Brazil is
used for processing.
Onion prices in the Pacific Northwest
were up 30% to 50% from last fall, the Capital Press reported. Shipments were down
8% to 13% in the region. As much as 5% of
the crop was damaged or left unharvested
due to adverse weather. FBN
