Edible Oils
Bookings of edible fats and oils expanded last week. Prices were mixed.
Soybean oil prices edged lower. Soybean oil futures declined even as the rest
of the soy complex moved higher. Exerting pressure was the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Feb. 11 World Agricultural
Supply and Demand Estimates report
that raised the forecast for the 2020 soybean oil carryover while lowering carryovers for soybeans and soybean meal.
The cash basis on soybean oil was
unchanged. Basis coverage for April-June
was estimated at 75% while third-quarter coverage remained less than 20%.
Soybean oil users booked what
supply was required to keep contract balances extended about 90 days.
The U.S.D.A. on Feb. 11 projected
the carryover of soybean oil on Oct. 1,
2020, at 1,515 million lbs, up 69 million
lbs from the January projection but
down 15% from 1,775 million lbs in
2019. Soybean oil use for biodiesel in
2019-20 was forecast at 8,200 million
lbs, down 300 million lbs from the
January outlook but up 4% from 7,863
million lbs in 2018-19. The soybean oil
export forecast was raised 200 million
lbs from January to 1,900 million lbs.
Use for food, feed and other industrial
applications for 2019-20 was forecast
at 14,900 million lbs, down 100 million
lbs from January and down 109 million
lbs from 15,009 million lbs in 2018-19.

The U.S.D.A. indicated net export
sales of soybean oil for delivery in 201920 during the week ended Feb. 6 totaled
39,100 tonnes with South Korea and
Morocco the week's largest buyers.
Cottonseed oil prices advanced
with some loads purchased even above
the quote (39c per lb) on this page. The
market is thinly traded and susceptible
to wide swings on minor changes in supply or demand.
Lard and edible tallow prices remained stubbornly strong. Demand for
inedible tallow for use in biodiesel production lent underlying support to the
edible market, which typically weakens
following the fall baking season.
Palm oil prices declined. India's
palm oil imports in January were the
lowest in 18 months as strong prices
encouraged Indian importers to turn to
soybean oil.
The premium to soybean oil futures
asked for refined canola oil in the Midwest widened to 5½c a lb. FBN
