Cocoa

Egg product prices mostly were
unchanged last week. Trading remained
active. Breaking egg prices were steady.
Dried and frozen egg production
values were unchanged. Liquid whole
and white prices were 1c a lb lower. Prices
remained well below year-ago levels for
dried whole and white, and for frozen
and liquid white and yolk. Prices were
near or above year-ago levels for dried
white and frozen and liquid whole egg.
Breaking egg prices were unchanged but were down about 70% from
last November and 40% lower than in
February 2019. Prices were below breakeven levels for egg producers. Although
supplies were light to moderate in the
past week, equaling light-to-moderate
demand, excess egg production pressured both retail and processing egg
prices throughout most of 2019, and
there appeared to be no letup in sight.
"Prices aren't going to change until
the surplus is reduced," one processor said.
The Hershey Co. announced an expanded commitment to use only cage-free
eggs and egg products across its global
supply chain by 2025. Previously, Hershey
had committed to use only cage-free eggs
and products in Canada and the United
States by the end of 2020. Hershey joined
other major food companies, such as
Mondelez International, General Mills and
Nestle, in committing to cage-free eggs in
the next five years on a global basis. FBN

Cocoa powder prices were unchanged
last week. New sales were noted for the
last half of 2020 and for the first half of
2021, including at least natural and red
Dutch powders. Powder prices remained
favorable, encouraging users to lock in
new or additional coverage into next year.
Conversely, cocoa butter prices have
continued to rise. The butterfat ratio
has held about steady at 2.48 times the
cocoa bean futures price. As futures have
risen to multi-year highs, butter prices
have escalated along with them, while
cocoa powder's share of the equation has
declined modestly since the first of the
year. Cocoa powder prices typically move
opposite cocoa butter prices.
New York and London cocoa bean
futures pulled back slightly from two- to
three-year highs earlier last week, with
nearby New York prices up more than
30% from a year ago amid active trading. Support came from concerns about
the impact of hot, dry weather in West
Africa, which some forecast may cut
mid-crops by 15% in Ivory Coast and to
five- to six-year lows in Ghana.
Ivory Coast cocoa bean arrivals at
ports from Oct. 1 to Feb. 9 were estimated
by exporters at 1.436 million tonnes, down
slightly from the same period a year earlier, although deliveries for the week of Feb.
3-9 were up 16%. Attention was turning to
the April-September mid-crop as the main
crop harvest was winding down. FBN
