HARD WINTER. Premiums on hard
red winter wheat in Kansas City were
10c a bu higher to 25c lower last week.
The basis on the highest-protein wheat
tumbled 21@25c with the retreat partly
attributed to trades influenced by recent
weakness in the spring wheat market.
Premiums at 11.6% and 11.8% proteins
advanced 10c and 5c, respectively.
Mills' wheat pipelines remained
mostly filled, especially in view of continued receipt of wheat shipments for application against February contracts. At
the same time, mills were loath to allow
wheat offered on the spot market with
the protein and qualities they required to
slip through their hands.
Conversations about extending
wheat coverage were few. Millers were
reluctant to contract for large volumes
of wheat until bakers added more flour
coverage to their books, a trader said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, in its Feb. 11 World Agricultural
Supply and Demand Estimates report,
forecast the carryover of hard red winter wheat on June 1, 2020, at 484 million
bus, down 5 million bus from the January projection because of a 5-million-bu
increase in the 2019-20 export forecast
to 390 million bus.
Justin Gilpin, chief executive officer
of Kansas Wheat, noted that because
Chicago soft red winter wheat futures
have maintained a significant premium
to Kansas City hard red winter wheat
futures in the past several months, wheat
producers in eastern Kansas may have
increased plantings of soft red winter
wheat last fall. In recent years, soft red
winter wheat has comprised about 1% of
Kansas winter wheat production.
Mr. Gilpin also suggested that a
few producers in western Nebraska and
northwest Kansas were working with a
seed company to explore the feasibility
of planting spring wheat in their areas.
Salina spot wheat bids were the K.C.
March price; new crop, 20c under July.
Hutchinson spot wheat bids were the
K.C. March price; new crop, 10c under July.
Wichita elevator bids for nearby were 5c
under K.C. March; new crop, 10c under
July. Gulf bids on 12%-protein hard red
winter were 162c over March, down 10c.

HARD SPRING. Premiums on hard
red spring wheat in Minneapolis were
unchanged to 30c a bu lower last week.
Wide downward adjustments were posted at the low ends of premium ranges
at 14% and 15% proteins. The basis was
trimmed 5c a bu at the high end of the
premium range at 14.5% protein.
Mills' wheat coverage through
March was extensive, although buyers remained on the lookout for select proteins
and qualities to fill gaps that may emerge.
There were few conversations about adding to April-June wheat coverage.
Canadian supply chains, including those moving agricultural products
between eastern Canada and the U.S. Midwest, were disrupted by protest blockades
erected by opponents of a natural gas pipeline through northern British Columbia.

downtrend in Minneapolis wheat futures
meant that the market has work to do to
secure spring wheat acres for 2020.

wheat remained firm with no weakening
expected until new crop. St. Louis-area
bids on soft red winter wheat for nearby
through March were 65c over Chicago
