Dry dairy product and cheese prices
mostly were lower last week, and butter
prices were the lowest in nearly five
years. The coronavirus was a factor, in
part because it was causing logistics
snarls and backlogs at some ports. At the
same time, milk supplies were ample,
and milk prices were near seasonal lows.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture
cited the impact of the coronavirus on
the dairy market from "peripheral" to
"quantifiable," especially in relation to
export trade. Seasonally increasing milk
production pushed more milk to dryers.
Both factors encouraged buyers to only
cover near-term needs as they expected
prices would continue to fall.
Prices of high-heat nonfat dry milk
(N.D.M.) were steady to 6c a lb lower with
pressure in the West. Demand was good
in the East. Stocks were tight to balanced
and mostly for contractual needs.
Low/medium-heat N.D.M. prices
were lowered 4c a lb in all regions. Trading was slow and directed at near-term

needs. Production was active, and inventories were building in most areas.
The CME Group N.D.M. price fell to a
five-month low.
Buttermilk powder dropped 4c a
lb with pressure in the Central and East
due to ample supply from active butter
churning. In the West, production was
limited with dryers focused on N.D.M.
Dry whey prices were lowered 1c a lb on
pressure in the Central and the West, while
prices firmed slightly in the East. Outturn
was steady to strong due to active cheese
production. Domestic demand remained
good, and export interest was noted.
Narrow, mixed price changes were
seen for 34% whey protein concentrate.
Demand remained strong, and stocks
were tight, but lower N.D.M. prices were
a pressuring factor. Lactose prices were
unchanged. Production was steady to
higher, but stocks were committed.
Cheese prices were mostly lower
amid active production due to ample milk
supplies. Stocks were growing but not
burdensome. Domestic sales were mixed.
Butter prices continued to decline.
Cream was readily available, and churning
was active. Demand was meeting expectations, but production outstripped sales.
Some buyers took advantage of nearly fiveyear low prices to build inventories.
The U.S.D.A., in its Feb. 24 Cold Storage report, said Jan. 31 butter stocks were
up 28% from Dec. 31, 2019, and were up
15% from a year ago. FBN
