Egg Products
Breaking egg and liquid whole egg
prices plummeted 48% last week as
market channels adjusted to changing
retail sales, the recent abrupt downturn
in foodservice demand and adequate to
ample egg supplies.
Anecdotally, retail egg prices were
sharply lower, as much as 50% or more
in some Midwest grocery stores, from
highs posted a week or two earlier, and
store shelves were much better stocked.
Retail demand still was considered good,
but it was no longer adequate to support
the recent surge in prices or to utilize the
heavy offers of eggs from producers.
The average price of Grade A large retail eggs as reported by the US Department
of Agriculture dropped 10¢ a dozen, while
Grade A medium eggs fell 55¢ a dozen, or
23%, for the week. Excess medium eggs
were redirected to processors who didn't
need them because of the slowdown in egg
product sales, especially to the foodservice
sector, where some processors noted sales
were down 80% to 100% from before sheltering at home began. Nest run breaking
stock eggs fell 24¢ a dozen, or 48%, while
checks plunged 29c, or 73%.
Egg supplies were ample before the
coronavirus struck, and supplies have
been adequate since, having caught up
with the surge in retail demand. Some
egg producers were putting hens into
forced molt or even culling flocks to
reduce supply, a Midwest processor said.

Cocoa
Cocoa powder prices were unchanged amid steady trading last week.
Strong sales of at-home baking products,
such as brownie and cake mixes, temporarily boosted powder demand.
New York cocoa bean futures posted
modest gains of about $40 to $60 per tonne,
with rising outside markets providing
much of the impetus. Market fundamentals remained mostly bearish with timely
rainfall boosting cocoa bean crop prospects
in West Africa and an uncertain impact on
chocolate demand from the coronavirus.
Cocoa bean arrivals at Ivory Coast
ports from Oct. 1 to April 5 totaled 1.677
million tonnes, down 2.8% from the
same period a year earlier, according to
exporters.
Ivory Coast October-March cocoa
bean grind was 282,000 tonnes, up 4.4%
from first-half 2018-19, exporter association GEPEX said. March grind was 47,000
tonnes, up 7% from March 2019. FBN
