Wheat futures
Wheat futures advanced last week
with Kansas City wheat futures leading
the charge. The gains marked a reversal
of the previous week's moves, which saw
wheat futures giving back a portion of
the astounding advances they scored in
mid-March when the scramble for wheat
and flour was in full swing.
With the urgency in mill demand
subsiding, traders' attention shifted to
the weather. A cold snap forecast for
much of the hard red winter wheat belt
during Easter weekend helped ignite a
runup in the week's final session. The
weather concerns overshadowed the US
Department of Agriculture's April US
and world wheat supply-and-demand
forecasts that were mostly bearish.
The USDA raised its forecast for the
US carryover of wheat on June 1, 2020,
by 30 million bus, to 970 million bus, as
it lowered 2019-20 feed use and export
forecasts by 15 million bus each. The
USDA lowered its export forecast because
of the slower recent pace of sales with US
wheat prices too high to be competitive
in some key international markets.
The USDA also raised its forecast
for 2019-20 world wheat ending stocks.
The revised forecast was a record 292.78
million tonnes, up 5.64 million tonnes

Nearby prices were unchanged to
sharply higher as declining flour mill
grind proved insufficient to meet consistent feed demand last week.

Eroding flour mill runtimes were
a product of upended demand trends as
a huge portion of American consumers
complied with stay-at-home guidance
amid the coronavirus. Flour mills oriented to supply foodservice sectors reduced
grind severely. One milling company
shuttered a Northeast location for the
first of two planned weeks and shifted
production of family flour to a Southwest
location to satisfy still-surging demand
at the retail level.
Ensuing tight supplies bumped up
nearby prices where millfeed still could
be sourced. The Northeast remained the
biggest problem area for buyers, and the
price went to "no quote" by week's end.
Southeast buyers were in similar straits
after midds flowing south from the Central states began to wane.
Elevated prices, tight supply, green
pastures and falling herd sizes due to
demand challenges in the hog, dairy and
poultry sectors may create "a hard, fast
fall from grace" for millfeed, a trader
said.
Millfeed was $90 a ton in Kansas
City and $139 in Minneapolis, on a rail
basis. Corn gluten feed was steady at
$190 a ton, dried distillers grain was $215
a ton, and dehydrated alfalfa was steady

from the March projection. World wheat
exports in 2019-20 were lowered 1.52 million tonnes from March, to 182.71 million
tonnes, and total world domestic use was
lowered 5.15 million tonnes, to 749.78
million tonnes.
The USDA indicated net export
sales of US wheat for delivery in 2019-20
during the week ended April 2 totaled
258,600 tonnes, up noticeably from the
previous week but down 36% from the
prior four-week average.
The USDA issued its first national
Crop Progress report of the season. The
USDA rated the condition of the nation's
winter wheat crop as of April 5 at 62%
good to excellent compared with 60% a
year ago.
The European Union has posted its
largest exports since 2014-15. European
futures have posted gains amid some
limits placed on Black Sea exports.
Western European and the Black
Sea crops have been dry. French farmers
