Soy Products
Bookings of soy flour were limited
last week. Prices declined with slumping
soybean meal futures a consideration.
Soy flour manufacturers remained
busy. While some contracted buyers have
asked that their shipments be delayed,
others have asked that their orders be
expedited. This was a trend seen in other
ingredients as well, reflecting decreased
demand from buyers supplying the foodservice sector and stronger demand from
those supplying retail grocers.
Soy flour coverage, including that held
by bakers, was nearly completed through
the summer. With coverage locked in,
manufacturers had little or no supply to accommodate new buyers seeking spot-quick
delivery. Such buyers may encounter offers
higher than those quoted on this page.
The US Department of Agriculture
said net export sales of soybean cake and
meal for delivery in 2019-20 totaled 193,300
tonnes, up 55% from a week earlier and up
23% from the four-week average. FBN

Sales and shipments of corn products remained brisk last week. There
weren't many additional bookings concluded with most major buyers covered
through the quarter or even the summer
and concerned primarily with pushing
for early shipments against current contracts to meet sometimes urgent demand.

Bookings of food-grade oat flakes
and other oats products were steady last
week as some major buyers continued to
extend contract balances into the third
quarter or even through the end of the
year. Prices were unchanged.
Mills remained busy. Covered buyers
continued to pull early from contracts to
meet the still-strong demand for products required to ensure grocers' shelves
are stocked amid heightened buying during the pandemic. Demand for oat-based
hot and cold breakfast cereals as well as
granola bars was particularly pressing.
The USDA said 24% of the nation's oats crop was planted by April 5

pertaining to much of the country have
stimulated stronger consumer demand
for corn products such as salted snacks,
corn bread mix and breakfast cereals.
Seasonal demand for brewer's grits also
was beginning to increase.
Prices of corn meal were mostly
steady with corn futures trading sideways following the recent slump.
The USDA indicated net export sales
of corn for delivery in 2019-20 during the
week ended April 2 totaled a marketingyear high 1,848,900 tonnes, up 72% from
the previous week and up 41% from the
prior four-week average. Japan and South

Rice
Business in milled and industrial
rice remained strong last week as millers
ran full schedules to assist buyers who
struggled to keep up with retail demand.
Most buyers have contracts extending through June. In some instances,
buyers had coverage into July-September. But most attention remained on the
nearby with covered buyers continuing
to pull early from contracts. The same
buying pattern held true for buyers of
brokens, extruded rice and rice flour.
Pet food manufacturers have joined
with other rice buyers to press for early
shipments against contracts.
Millers' priority was to supply longestablished customers first, and only then
entertain bids to buy rice from new customers. In some instances, the new requests for
supply could not be accommodated.
The USDA indicated 17% of the
nation's rice crop was planted by April
5 compared with 17% a year earlier and
19% as the recent five-year average for
the date. Planting was just underway in
Arkansas, where the USDA has forecast a
25% increase in long-grain rice acres.
Rice prices were strong with supplies tight. While Arkansas rice and rice
byproduct prices as quoted by the USDA
were unchanged after rising the previous
week, world rice prices as quoted by the
USDA continued to advance strongly. FBN
