Manufacturing plants close as
workers fall ill with COVID-19

Tyson Foods suspended
operations at a pork
plant after more than
24 employees tested
positive for COVID-19.

KANSAS CITY - Several food processing
plants have shuttered temporarily after
employees tested positive for COVID-19,
the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. Among companies suspending
operations at affected sites are Maple Leaf
Foods, Inc., Cargill, Tyson Foods, Inc. and
JBS USA.
Michael McCain, president and chief
executive officer at Maple Leaf Foods, Mississauga, Ont., announced on April 8 the
company would suspend operations at its
poultry plant in Brampton, Ont. The company was investigating three COVID-19
cases among employees at the facility. The
company also reported one individual
testing positive in Hamilton, Ont.
"Our first priority is to keep our
people safe, so the decision was made to
shut down the facility, pending a full risk
assessment," Mr. McCain said. "While we
complete the investigation, we are deep
cleaning the plant, including common
areas and offices. Our goal is to complete
the investigation and the deep cleaning
as quickly as reasonably possible. We will
not begin operating again until we are
confident that it is safe to return to work."
Maple Leaf said it would continue to
collaborate with public health agencies
and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency
to ensure a safe work environment for employees at operations across the country.
"This is a very fluid situation, and
our teams are working very closely within
our network, as well as with our supply

chain and logistics partners so that we can
continue to deliver safe food at this critical
time," Mr. McCain said.
Cargill, Minneapolis, suspended
operations at a meat processing plant in
Hazleton, Pa., on April 7 after an unspecified number of workers there tested positive for the virus. A spokesperson for the
company said the employees are receiving
appropriate medical care and that additional details about the employees could
not be shared due to privacy laws. The
case-ready pork and beef plant employs
approximately 900 people.
Jon Nash, Cargill Protein's North
America lead, said the plant would resume operations as soon as it is safe to do
so and closing the Hazleton facility would
minimize the impact of the virus while
following guidelines from public health
officials and protecting other employees.
Hazleton mayor Jeff Cusat said on
April 7 that 849 cases of COVID-19 had
been confirmed in the city and three
deaths had resulted from the virus.
"We want our employees and the
community to know we care," Mr. Nash
said. "We've taken extra steps to focus on
safety and remain operational, including
temporary wage increases, bonuses and
waiving co-pays for COVID-19 testing. We
also implemented additional safety measures like temperature testing, enhanced
cleaning and sanitizing, prohibiting visitors, adopting social distancing practices
where possible and offering staggered

breaks and shift flexibility."
Mr. Nash said the company's other
plants remain operational as Cargill
adapts its business during the pandemic.
"Cargill provides an essential service
to the world - providing the ingredients,
feed and food that nourishes people and
animals," he said. "We are working with
farmers and ranchers, our customers and
our employees to supply food in this time
of crisis and keep markets moving."
Tyson Foods, Springdale, Ark.,
suspended operations at its Columbus
Junction, Iowa, pork plant after more than
24 employees tested positive for COVID-19.
Approximately 1,400 workers are employed at the facility. The company said it
is taking a proactive approach to ensure
the rest of its processing facilities remain
in operation while minimizing risks to
employees during the pandemic.
Noel W. White, CEO of Tyson Foods,
said the company is taking steps to maintain social distancing in its facilities as
well as equipping workers with personal
protection equipment and taking the temperature of employees before they enter
plants. Some facilities have been equipped
with temperature scanners. Additional
cleaning and sanitizing of plants also has
become part of the company's precautions.
Mr. White said the company is working with governmental agencies to access
adequate face masks or shields to protect
workers in processing plants. To ensure
social distancing, Tyson is experimenting
with different types of in-plant enhancements, including increasing space
between workers and building dividers
between work stations, which may slow
production lines.
"We're also creating more room in
non-production areas," Mr. White added.
"For example, at some locations, we've set
up tents to create outdoor break rooms.
"Our meat and poultry plants are
experiencing varying levels of production
impact due to the planned implementation of additional worker safety precautions and worker absenteeism."
Tyson planned to reroute hog shipments to its other plants in the region.
JBS USA, Greeley, Colo., reduced production at its Souderton, Pa., beef plant
