Egg Products
Weakness persisted in egg and egg
product markets, but price declines were
not as precipitous as in the prior couple of
weeks. The loss of foodservice business
due to closings related to the coronavirus
continued to overhang the market.
Retail egg business remained good,
but the panic buying seen at the start of
the shelter-at-home period appeared to
have subsided as grocery store egg coolers remained adequately stocked and
customers were limited to two cartons
in many stores. Grade A large egg prices
that shot to record highs above $3 a
dozen have plunged 50% or more.
Breaking egg prices declined about
5c a dozen but have limited downside
potential after plummeting 75% to
90% since the end of March. Offers to
processors were adequate to ample with
breaking eggs no longer being routed to
retail. Because of the slowdown in the
foodservice business, breakers were buying limited supply on the open market.
Those in vertically integrated operations
had little choice but to break eggs, and
there were anecdotal reports of some
liquid product being dumped because of
a lack of options to sell, freeze or dry the
product.
Pasteurized liquid whole egg slipped
to fresh record lows last week just above
10c a lb, with unpasteurized as low as 8c
a lb. Ample supplies of liquid whole egg
also pressured frozen whole egg, down 5c

a lb, and dried whole egg, down 15c.
White and yolk prices held up well
in part because processors refused to
separate eggs at current low prices with
limited demand for yolk, unless they had
product already sold, a Midwest processor said. Good demand was noted for
dried white from confectioners and meat
substitute manufacturers.

Europe's first-quarter cocoa bean
grind was 373,625 tonnes, up 0.9% from
the same quarter last year, the highest
for the quarter and the second highest
for any quarter in records back to 2003,
the European Cocoa Association said. Reported a week earlier, first-quarter North
America grind was down 5% from 2019,
and Asian grind was down 0.5%.
Jeffrey Rasinski, commodity and
risk management consultant at the
Blommer Chocolate Co., said he considered global grind as an aggregate
about flat with a year ago, which wasn't
a bullish demand indicator. Considering
recent declines in cocoa bean futures, he
suggested buyers should have coverage
11 to 12 months forward as there may be
more upside for powder prices. FBN
