Nuts
Peanuts in the eight major states
were 2% planted as of April 19, in line with
the 2015-19 average, the US Department
of Agriculture said. Most planting was in
Florida at 13% completed, with Alabama,
Georgia and South Carolina each at 1%.
California nut crops were progressing with some areas forecasting better
crops than a year ago, the USA said.
Pistachios were leafing out, and walnuts
were emerging from dormancy. FBN

Meat and Poultry
The meat sector has become a coronavirus "hot spot" as several processing
plants were closed for various lengths of
time due to workers testing positive for
the virus, with an estimated 10% to 15%
of pork processing capacity idle last week.

expected to temporarily tighten meat
supplies and boost meat prices, with talk
of meat shortages common. Unlike milk
and eggs, which cows and hens continue
to produce whether there is a market
for them or not, cattle and hogs may be
held off the market until plants reopen,
but those animals will come to market
heavier, boosting meat supplies.
Wholesale meat prices have been
on a rollercoaster the past several weeks,
while cattle and hog prices have declined
as slaughter options grow more limited.
The USDA beef cutout value jumped
23% in March, sank 12% in the two weeks
ended April 10 and then soared 27% in
the two weeks ended April 24 to what appeared to be record highs as beef plants
closed because of the coronavirus.
The USDA pork cutout value also
saw significant volatility, moving up
about 25% in March, plunging 32% in
the two weeks ended April 10 only to
skyrocket 45% in the two weeks ended
April 24. Still, pork values were modestly
below recent highs set in November 2019.
Most chicken prices also posted solid gains the past two weeks but remained
well below year-ago levels.
Livestock and meat were included
in the $19 billion coronavirus support
package that included direct payments,
beginning by late May, for lost income,
and government purchases for food
banks and nutrition programs. FBN

Dry Edible Beans
Dry bean prices paid to growers
were steady except for pinto beans,
which were steady to $1 a cwt higher.
Prices were well above year-ago levels except for black beans and garbanzo beans.
Demand was good for limited offers.
Grower dry pea and lentil prices were
steady to firmer. Planting of dry peas was
well underway in some states. FBN

Produce
Produce has seen significant impact
from the coronavirus, losing much of
the foodservice business. While retail
grocery sales have been strong, most
produce isn't something consumers are
able to "stock up" on unless it's the frozen
variety. Growers were plowing under
or leaving crops unharvested in some
areas due to lost markets, while attempts
were made to get perishable produce to
food banks and nutrition programs, and
in some cases allowing consumers to
self-harvest. Produce was included in the
$19 billion government support package
announced April 17.
Processing apple prices were steady.
Trading was moderate to mostly active
with offers still heavy in Washington.
California processing tomatoes
showed good growth, the state USDA
office said. Tomato paste prices were
