Nuts
Peanuts in the eight major states
were 46% planted by May 17, behind 56%
a year ago and 53% as the 2015-19 average,
the US Department of Agriculture said.
Planting was behind average in all states
but Alabama and Florida, with Oklahoma
the slowest at just 10% (51% average).
Almond yield continued to look strong
in the Central Valley as nut fill advanced,

Meat and Poultry
Wholesale beef and pork prices have
come off their coronavirus-driven peak
as more packing plants reopened, although intermittent closings continued.
At one point, nearly 40% of US slaughter
capacity was offline because of workers
testing positive for the coronavirus.
The USDA beef cutout value for a
choice 600 to 900 lb carcass was $401.81

but down 7% for the week and down 15%
from its May 12 record of $475.39 per cwt.
The USDA pork cutout value for a
55% to 56% lean 215-lb carcass was $96.94
a cwt on May 21, up 18% from a year ago
but down 12% for the week and down
20% from its May 11 peak of $120.95 a cwt.
As expected, red meat production
tumbled in April as packing houses
closed. Beef production was down 20%
from a year earlier, and pork production
was down 10%, the USDA said in its May
21 Livestock Slaughter report. Production in March had been record high.
At retail, many grocers, in an effort
to keep coolers stocked as they received
reduced meat supplies from processors,
have limited the amount of beef, pork
and chicken that customers may buy.
Notable was the lack of advertisements for grilling meats, such as hamburger, steak, pork ribs and chicken, ahead
of the Memorial Day weekend, seen as the
kickoff to the summer grilling season.
Significant for the pork industry
was approval by the US Department of
Justice of a plan submitted by the National Pork Producers Council to work with
the USDA, state governments and others
to euthanize up to 700,000 hogs per
week due to reduced slaughter capacity
during the pandemic. At least 2 million
hogs ready for slaughter were said to be
backed up because of plant closings and

reduced capacity after reopening.
The USDA issued its Cattle on Feed
report Friday after this magazine went
to print, but trade expectations were for
sharp declines in cattle placed in feedlots
(down 23% from 2019) and marketings
(down 25%) during April because of lost
slaughter capacity and marketing options due to the coronavirus. FBN

Dry Edible Beans
Dry bean prices paid to growers were
unchanged except for navy beans in the
North Dakota/Minnesota region, which
were firm to $2 a cwt higher. Demand was
strong for the limited supplies available.
Dry edible beans planted as of
May 17 ranged from none reported in
Michigan to 92% in Oregon with states
other than the Pacific Northwest mostly
behind the average pace for the date. FBN

Produce
In addition to rains and flooding
that inundated Michigan last week,
freezes early the prior week "caused significant fruit damage across the state,"
the USDA field office said, noting widespread freeze damage to apples, peaches
and cherries, all of which were in bloom.
Processing apple prices were steady
to firm with active trading in areas that
still have 2019 crop supply available. FBN
