Uncrustables unleashed from
supply constraints

ORRVILLE, OHIO - Timing, as they say, is
everything. The J.M. Smucker Co. opened
its new Uncrustables manufacturing plant
in Longmont, Colo., in July 2019. A little
more than a year later the plant is running
at full capacity and sales of the frozen,
handheld sandwiches have spiked.
Sales of Uncrustables were $289

million in fiscal 2019 and jumped to $365
million in fiscal 2020, ended April 30,
as demand for prepared foods rose in
the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19)
pandemic.
"With accelerating consumption growth, we are operating the new
Longmont, Colo., facility at full capacity,"

Califia Farms brings Ritterbush
on as chief executive officer

said Mark T. Smucker, president and
chief executive officer, during a Sept. 8
presentation at the virtual Barclays Global
Consumer Staples Conference. "A new
production line will be operational in January, and phase two of the plant expansion
is set to begin next calendar year."
Management has set a goal for the
brand to reach $500 million in sales by
fiscal 2023.
Tucker H. Marshall, chief financial
officer, forecast Uncrustables will achieve
double-digit growth in fiscal 2021. The
additional production capacity will play a
key role and be bolstered by new products
added to the line.
The new products include lunch
and snack items, including thaw-and-eat
roll-ups and a line of heat-and-eat bites.
The roll-up items will come in varieties
like meat and cheese while the bites
will include barbecue chicken and taco

CALIFIA FARMS

LOS ANGELES - Plant-based food and beverage maker Califia Farms has hired David
W. Ritterbush as chief executive officer.
He succeeds Greg Steltenpohl, founder of
Califia, who will retire as CEO but remain
on the company's board as an executive
director.
Mr. Ritterbush is a veteran of the
consumer packaged foods industry,
having most recently held the position of
CEO at Quest Nutrition, where he guided
the company to a $1 billion acquisition
by The Simply Good Foods Co. Prior to
Quest, he was CEO of Popchips, and earlier he was CEO of Premier Nutrition Corp.
Additionally, Mr. Ritterbush has
worked as vice president and general
manager of Red Bull North America and
spent many years as senior vice president
of marketing at Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream.

Mr. Steltenpohl founded Odwalla
Juice Co. before launching Califia Farms
in 2010. Under his direction, the company
has become a leader in premium, plantbased beverages.

said. "Now is the perfect time in the
company's evolution for this next step. We

In January 2020, Califia announced a
$225 million Series D financing to fuel its
innovation and growth. Califia expanded
its plant-based milk portfolio by introducing a new oat platform in 2019, and
the company recently added plant-based
spreads to its portfolio of plant-based
milks, creamers, yogurts and cold-brew
