Wheat futures
Wheat futures declined last week.
The 2020 harvest was nearing its end.
The weekly US Department of Agriculture's export sales report was lackluster
for wheat as recent advances in prices
rendered US offers noncompetitive in
several large international tenders. And
increasing world supplies forecast by the
USDA in its September World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates
report pressured wheat futures at the
week's end.
One analyst commented the recent
choppy trade in wheat futures also was
linked in part to volatility in the US dollar and financial markets.
The USDA left its US all-wheat supply and demand forecasts unchanged
from August with the exception of offsetting changes for wheat exports by class.
The USDA will revisit its 2020 wheat
production estimates in the Sept. 30 annual Small Grains Summary.
At the same time, the USDA raised
its forecast for world wheat production
in 2020-21 to a record 770.49 million
tonnes, up 4.46 million tonnes from the
August projection and up 6.46 million
tonnes from 764.03 million tonnes in
2019-20. Production forecasts were

Most flour mills were up and running the day after Labor Day. Exceptions
were an Indiana mill that struggled to
restart and a Buffalo mill that remained
dark as part of a planned seven-day
maintenance. Grind was strong for the
remainder of the week, but not enough
to make up for holiday downtime. As a
result, supplies were expected to be tight
into midmonth in areas such as Ohio.
Demand was typical for the season.
Creep feeders were being filled more
regularly than in the prior three weeks.
Catfish producers still were drawing
loads to the Gulf region, though to a
lesser degree than in late August.
Millfeed prices remained competitive
relative to alternate ingredients with one
exception. Feed mixers felt millfeed was
too pricey compared with corn even as the
latter rallied last week, including a futures
bump at week's end on bullish data in the
USDA's crop production report.
Millfeed was $95 a ton in Kansas
City and $105 in Minneapolis, on a rail
basis, compared with corn at $126 a ton
and sorghum at $136 a ton, both KC. Corn
gluten feed was steady at $155 a ton, dried
distillers' grains were $5 higher at $160 a
ton, and dehydrated alfalfa was steady at
$300 a ton, all KC. FBN

European Union. The USDA forecast
2020-21 world wheat ending stocks at
a record 319.37 million tonnes, up 2.58
million tonnes from August and up 7%
from 299.78 million tonnes in 2019-20.
The ending stocks forecast was above
the average of pre-report trade estimates.
The USDA, in its weekly export sales
report, said net export sales of US wheat
during the week ended Sept. 3 totaled
484,400 tonnes, down 17% from the previous week and down 14% from the prior
four-week average.
The USDA, in its weekly Crop
Progress report, said the spring wheat
harvest was 82% completed by Sept. 6
compared with 69% a week earlier and
87% as the recent five-year average progress for the date.
The USDA also said the 2021 winter
wheat crop was 5% planted by Sept. 6
compared with 3% as the five-year average. Planting was underway only in the
hard winter wheat states thus far. FBN
