Corn Products

Bookings of soy flour were limited
last week. Prices rose once again as soybean meal futures continued to advance.
Soy flour coverage was nearly solid
through December, and some coverage
was on the books for January-March.
But most users held back on first-quarter and first-half 2021 coverage, hoping
for what has proved to be an elusive
price break despite the advancing soybean harvest.
Soybean meal futures remained
on an upward tear following soybeans
but also buoyed by recent heavy foreign
demand for US soybean meal. Argentina is the world's largest exporter of
soybean meal. But the soybean crush
there, hence exportable supply, has
been depressed by the unwillingness
of producers to sell soybeans at current prices. This opened the way for an
expansion in sales of US soybean meal
abroad.
The US Department of Agriculture
said net export sales of soybean cake and
meal during the week ended Oct. 1 and
for delivery in 2020-21, which began Oct.
1, totaled 271,700 tonnes. The USDA said
net export sales of soybeans during the
same week and for delivery in 2020-21
totaled 2,590,700 tonnes with China the
principal buyer at 1,538,100 tonnes.
The USDA, in its weekly Crop Progress report, said 38% of the soybean crop
was harvested by Oct. 4 compared with
20% a week earlier and 28% as the recent
five-year average progress for the date. FBN

Sales and shipments of corn products remained strong last week. Prices
continued to advance as corn futures
extended their rally and cash corn basis
levels remain firm.
The futures rally discouraged buyers from extending deferred coverage.
Corn futures have advanced about 60¢ a
bu from early August.
Shipments of corn flour, muffin mixes and other products that typically see
increased demand in the fall were brisk.
Demand for flaking grits from breakfast
cereal manufacturers was steady.
The USDA, in its weekly Crop Progress report, said 25% of the corn crop was
harvested by Oct. 4 compared with 15% a
week earlier and 24% as the recent fiveyear average for the date.
The USDA said net export sales of
corn during the week ended Oct. 1 and
for delivery in 2020-21 totaled 1,225,700
tonnes with several buyers in the mix.
Japan was the largest confirmed buyer,
accounting for 360,100 tonnes. FBN

and other oat products were brisk last
week. Prices were unchanged with
quotes having been adjusted to reflect
Midwest f.o.b. values the previous week.
Additional oat flakes buyers proved
willing to pay the premium asked for deferred coverage to take risk off the table.

deeper into 2021.
Orders and shipments were seasonally strong, but the pace was slower than

Rice
Business in milled and industrial rice
as well as in extruded rice and flour was
steady last week. Market prices continued
to weaken as the harvest progressed.
Most users who book quarterly have
covered their needs through December.
There was inquiry for first-quarter 2021
coverage, but no business was transacted
as buyers expected prices to decline.
Hurricane Delta made landfall in
Louisiana on Oct. 9. The rice harvest in
that state was nearly completed, but the
hurricane interrupted the remaining
harvest in Mississippi.
The USDA said 71% of the nation's
rice crop was harvested by Oct. 4 compared with 57% a week earlier and 78% as
the recent five-year average for the date.
The Arkansas harvest was 70% completed versus 86% as the average for the date.
The USDA said net export sales of
rice during the week ended Oct. 1 and for
delivery in 2020-21 totaled a marketing
year high 258,100 tonnes, up noticeably
from the previous week and the prior
four-week average. Most of the exports
comprised rough rice or shipments off
the West coast. Southern mills eagerly
awaited Iraqi mill rice purchases. FBN
