HARD WINTER. Premiums on hard
red winter wheat in Kansas City were 8¢ a
bu higher to 3¢ lower last week. The sole
losses were posted on wheat with protein
from 11.4% through 11.8%. Advances
were registered across the top two thirds
of the protein scale with the widest gains
applying to wheat with protein of 13%
and higher. Only the lowest-protein supply was unchanged.
The hard red winter wheat basis
remained inverted, but the inversion was
less pronounced than a week earlier. The
stronger tone seen across most of the
protein scale reflected mills' efforts to
draw enough wheat from the country to
sustain operations through the yearend
holidays at a time when wheat shippers
and railroads were encountering difficulties ensuring rail car loading and
shipments were timely.
A winter storm slowed rail car loading and shipments at the week's outset.
The inclement weather affected loading of
both contracted wheat and wheat meant to
be offered on the spot market. Rail logistics were further complicated by difficulties in fielding full workforces as elevator

workers at some locations were in quarantine because of exposure to COVID-19.
The same problem was encountered by the
railroads. " We've got cars sitting everywhere, but we don't have people to load
them, " a veteran merchandiser said.
While the weekend snowfall temporarily slowed rail shipments, it was
a boon to winter wheat fields entering
dormancy in southwest and southern
Kansas and southeastern Colorado. Some
areas received up to 10 inches of snow
with broad swaths of cropland averaging
7 to 8 inches, roughly equating to a halfinch or more of moisture.
" But every step you take to the north,
snowfall was not as good, " a trader said,
noting some Nebraska panhandle fields
received only an inch or so of snow cover.
The precipitation was very welcome, but it will take more storms and
much more moisture to break the grip of
drought in some of these areas.
Salina spot wheat bids were 20¢ under KC March. Hutchinson spot wheat
bids were 20¢ under KC March. Wichita
elevator bids for nearby were 15¢ under
KC March. Gulf bids on 12%-protein hard
red winter wheat for nearby were 152¢

spring wheat in Minneapolis were 35¢
a bu higher to 10¢ lower last week. The
widest gains were posted at 15% protein.
Premiums on wheat with protein below
15% were mostly unchanged to weaker.
" Car counts reflect the market telling people to hold off on shipping, " a veteran grain merchandiser said. " The best
thing producers can do is keep spring
wheat home. The market doesn't need it. "
Some mills eyed holiday week
schedules and were keen to avoid loaded
cars sitting on their tracks tallying demurrage over the holidays.
Freight prices rose as railroad
service fell slightly behind schedule.
Railroad manpower appeared lacking in
instances whether due to illness or crews
being shifted to intermodal service
ahead of Christmas.
SOFT RED. Mill bids on soft red winter
wheat were firm last week. St. Louis
area bids on soft red winter wheat were
55¢ over Chicago March; January-March,
55¢ over. Toledo mill bids for nearby
were 10¢ over Chicago March; JanuaryMarch, 10¢ over. Elevator bids through
March were the Chicago March price.
The Cincinnati elevator was not accepting old crop; new crop was bid 3¢ under
Chicago July. Michigan white wheat
mill bids were 5¢ to 10¢ over Chicago
March; soft red winter wheat mill bids
ranged from the Chicago March price to
5¢ under. Gulf bids on soft red winter for
nearby were 95¢ over Chicago March.
A winter storm laid a blanket of beneficial snow across much of the Central
states, from eastern Illinois and across
most of Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
Snowfall was even heavier in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
Rail transportation was temporarily
slowed by the storm.
Mills remained mostly comfortable
ahead of the holidays with pipelines on
the full side. " There's no panic yet, " a
miller said, but that may change if rail
and truck logistics worsen. " We're teetering on a point of enough/not enough, " a
