Nuts
The gathering and marketing of
pecans in Georgia and other major states
where the harvest was ongoing slowed
last week due to the holidays. Harvesting
should be completed in top-producing
Georgia during the first week of January.
Prices of peanuts, pistachios and
walnuts reported by the US Department
of Agriculture's Market News were
raised, pecan prices were lowered, and
almond and hazelnut prices were steady.
Volumes offered mostly were light. FBN
Meat and Poultry
The USDA beef and pork cutout
values posted modest changes over the
holidays, with both moving higher last
week, despite sharply lower rib cut prices
in the case of wholesale beef prices.

High feed prices are expected to
negatively affect livestock and poultry
production in the year ahead, of course
depending on livestock and meat prices.
The USDA in its quarterly Hogs and
Pigs report said the US all hogs and pigs inventory
on Dec. 1 was down 4% from a year
earlier, with market hogs and the September-November
pig crop also both down
4%, while sows farrowing in SeptemberNovember
were down 5%. The breeding
inventory was up slightly. The pig crop and
market hog inventories were record high
during part of 2019 and for much of 2020.
The USDA in its Cattle on Feed report
said the number of cattle in feedlots of
1,000 head or more on Dec. 1 was down
slightly from a year earlier, but cattle placed
in feedlots during November rose 4%, and
November marketings climbed 5%.
In its Livestock Slaughter report, the
USDA said beef and total red meat production
in November was record high for
the month, while pork production was
up slightly. Both cattle and hog slaughter
numbers in November were up from
a year earlier, but average weights for
both were down, indicating producers
were moving livestock to market more
quickly, possibly due to high feed costs.
Finally, the USDA said in its Cold
Storage report that Nov. 30 stocks of red
meat in freezers were down 4% from a
year earlier, including beef down 4%
and pork down 3%.
Total frozen poultry supplies on
Nov. 30 were down 18% from a year
earlier. FBN
Dry Edible Beans
Dry edible bean spot prices were
mostly unchanged the past two weeks
except for steady to lower values for
pinto beans and black beans in the Upper
Midwest. Trading was slow during the
holiday period. Prices remained well
above year-ago levels for all beans except
great northern beans, which were flat. FBN
Produce
Processing apple prices were steady
the past two weeks. Offers and trading
were mostly light with processors running
reduced holiday schedules.
The USDA in its latest Cold Storage
report said total frozen fruit stocks on
Nov. 30 were down 12% from a year earlier,
including blueberries down 10% and
strawberries down 27%. Stocks of frozen
concentrated orange juice were down
15% from Nov. 30, 2020.
Total frozen vegetable stocks on Nov.
30 were down 2% from a year earlier.
Tomato paste prices were unchanged
and were up about 60% from a year ago.
Distributors and wholesalers indicated
some California producers were rationing
supplies after adverse weather in 2021
reduced tomato production. FBN
