HARD WINTER. Premiums on hard
red winter wheat in Kansas City were 3¢ a
bu higher to 15¢ lower last week.
Loading of hard red winter wheat
at country locations in western Kansas
increased as elevators cleared space for
supplies from the ongoing harvest. As a
result, applications against July contracts
were hefty even as some June bushels
owed to mills still were outstanding.
With growers and elevators fully
engaged in harvest, to-arrive talks were
slim to none. Reports from the country
were that average proteins were creeping
higher as harvest moved west and north,
but at the expense of test weights.
Plains Grains, Inc., in its harvest
summary issued July 16, indicated that
with 266 wheat samples from Texas,
Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska
analyzed (of an expected 500),
the 2021 hard red winter wheat crop was
averaging 61.4 lbs per bu in test weight
(61.7 lbs last year), 11.4% protein (11% a
week earlier, 11.9% in 2020), 31.7 grams in
thousand kernel weight (31.6 grams last
year) and 280 seconds in falling number
(367 seconds in 2020). The average grade
was No. 1 hard red winter wheat.
The US Department of Agriculture
said winter wheat harvested by July 11 was
85% in Kansas (93% year ago, 89% as the
five-year average for the date), 97% in Oklahoma
(100%, 98%), 94% in Texas (100%,
96%), 19% in Colorado (65%, 47%), 23% in
Nebraska (45%, 40%), 16% in South Dakota
(4%, 12%) and 1% in Montana (0%, 1%).

bids through September were 5¢ under
KC Sept. Wichita elevator bids through
July were 14¢ under Sept. Gulf bids on
12%-protein hard red winter wheat for
July were 175¢ over Sept.; Aug.-Sept. 175¢
over Sept.
HARD SPRING. Premiums on hard red
spring wheat were 25¢ a bu higher to 60¢
lower last week.
After scattered rains of a half-inch
to two inches and more seasonally normal
temperatures the previous week,
the northern Plains reverted to hotter
temperatures and dry conditions last
week, a troubling development for

plants in the grain filling stage.
" Producers in the driest areas continue
to make choices on abandoning or
haying their wheat crop depending on
yield potential, " the North Dakota Wheat
Commission said.
The USDA analysis of the July 13
US Drought Monitor indicated 98% of
the spring wheat crop was growing in
drought. Spring wheat crop conditions
were the lowest since 1988.
The USDA said good-to-excellent
condition ratings were 16% in Idaho (18%
a week earlier), 28% in Minnesota (35%),
16% in Montana (7%), 16% in North Dakota
(18%), 3% in South Dakota (7%) and
1% in Washington (8%).
The USDA pegged 2021 other-spring
wheat production at 344,575,000 bus,
down 41% from 2020, based on a yield
of 30.7 bus an acre, down 17.9 bus from
2020, and harvested area of 11.2 million
acres, unchanged from June but down
7% from 2020. Hard red spring wheat
alone was seen at 305,395,000 bus, down
42% from 2020, which would be the
smallest outturn since 181 million bus in
1988, another drought-intensive year.

Winter wheat harvested by July 11
was 88% in Missouri (95% as the average
for the date), 95% in Illinois (91%), 77%
in Indiana (79%), 69% in Ohio (74%) and
12% in Michigan (15%).
US Wheat Associates said based on
230 out of an expected 300 soft red winter
wheat samples, the 2021 crop was averaging
59.5 lbs per bu in test weight (58.2 lbs as
the five-year average), 9.4% protein (9.6%),
34.3 grams in thousand kernel weight (32
grams) and 291 seconds in falling number
(313 seconds). The average grade was No. 2
