The US Department of Agriculture
in its Nov. 9 Crop Production report forecast
2021 US peanut production at 6,243
million lbs, down 0.8% from its October
forecast but up 1.4% from 2020.
Peanuts in the eight major states
were 86% harvested as of Nov. 14, ahead
of 84% a year ago but behind 89% as the
2016-20 average, the USDA said.
Harvests of almonds and walnuts
were completed while pistachio and pecan
harvests continued in California. Pecan
harvesting also continued in other states.
" With a predicted short season and
light crop available along with a lack of
export interest, some growers are just
accumulating and sorting their pecans to
be offered at a later time hoping that the
price offered is higher than this week, "
the USDA said in its Nov. 16 Pecan Report
concerning Georgia, where harvest was
59% completed by Nov. 14. FBN

The American Farm Bureau Federation
estimated the average price of
a typical Thanksgiving dinner for 10 at
$53.31, up 14% from 2020, led by a 24%
increase in the price of a 16-lb turkey.
The US Department of Agriculture said
year-to-date slaughter of young turkeys
was down 6% as of Nov. 6, while freezer
stocks of whole turkeys on Sept. 30
were down 5% with toms up 6% but
hens down 19% from last year. Frozen
turkey breast stocks were down 51%
from a year ago.
USDA beef and pork cutout values
both declined, and chicken part prices
were mixed. All three held above yearago
levels indicating good domestic and
export demand for protein.
The beef cutout was down 20% from
the 2021 high set in late August but still
was up 16% from a year ago. Rib cuts
firmed, but loin and trimming values were
mostly lower. Rib cut prices typically rise
after Thanksgiving based on consumer
demand over the Christmas holiday.
The pork cutout value was the
lowest since January. It was down 33%
from the summer high but still was up
12% from a year ago. Ham values firmed,
which is typical during the holiday
season, but prices of other cuts and trimmings
were mixed.
Chicken part prices were mixed
and were below highs (some record
highs) set earlier in the year but
remained well above year-ago levels. FBN
Dry Edible Beans
Dry edible bean prices were unchanged
except for a $2-per-cwt drop in
navy bean prices in Michigan. Spot trading
was light amid moderate demand.
The dry bean harvest was completed.
Except for great northern beans,
prices of all varieties are sharply higher
from a year ago largely as the result
of much lower production. The USDA
estimated 2021 production of dry edible
beans down 31% from 2020. Production
was down 29% for chickpeas (garbanzo
beans), down 44% for edible peas, and
down 31% for lentils.
Roquette on Nov. 17 opened a new
pea protein plant in Portage la Prairie,
Man., that it said was the largest in the
world. Along with its existing plant in
France, Roquette now has annual pea
processing capacity of 250,000 tons. FBN
Produce
The USDA forecast 2021 US potato
production at 413,162,000 cwts, down
1.6% from 2020 as a lower average yield
more than offset higher harvested area.
The apple harvest was mostly
completed across the country. Processing
apple prices were higher in Washington
and Michigan and mostly steady in the
