Sweeteners
The sugar beet harvest advanced
slowly in some key regions while the sugar
cane harvest was underway. Refined sugar
prices for 2021-22 were steady to higher.
Sugar beets in the four largest
producing states were an aggregate 20%
harvested as of Oct. 3, up from 14% a week
earlier but behind 42% a year ago and 28%
as the 2016-20 average for the date, the US
Department of Agriculture said. Progress
in the key Red River Valley was minimal
with Minnesota at 14% (11% a week earlier)

and North Dakota at 15% (13%). Rather
than going full out as expected, the harvest
was maintained at a level to keep factories
running but not build outside piles due
to the warm weather, which would cause
beet spoilage. In Michigan, beets were 37%
harvested (25% both a week earlier and a
year ago), but excessive rainfall raised the
chances that the sugar content of the beets
may decline.
The sugar cane harvest was underway
in Louisiana with 4% of the crop cut by
Oct. 3. The harvest was delayed in some
areas to give the crop more time to recover
from Hurricane Ida. Crop condition ratings
continued to decline.
There were mixed views about what
the USDA might do to its sugar production
forecasts in the Oct. 12 World Agricultural
Supply and Demand Estimates report.
Some expected the beet sugar production
forecast will be reduced from September after
last month's large increase from August,
but others expected little change in the
beet number. Most expected production in
Louisiana and possibly in Florida will be
reduced from September.
Sugar deliveries continued at an active
pace. Some suspected the good demand for
beet sugar was an offset to lower refined
cane sugar shipments from Louisiana
refiners due to Hurricane Ida disruption
rather than an actual increase in sugar
demand.
Bulk beet sugar prices were unchanged
from a week earlier. Midwest beet
sugar was offered for 2021-22 at 39¢ a lb
f.o.b., and Michigan sugar was offered at
41¢ a lb f.o.b. One refiner remained out of
the market and wasn't expected to reenter
until late October.
Refined cane sugar prices were firm
to higher. One processor was " quoting
upon request " for October-December after
pricing November-December at 55¢ a lb a
week earlier. That refiner offered January
forward at 49¢ a lb f.o.b. Northeast and
West Coast and at 47¢ a lb f.o.b Gulf and
Southeast, both up 1¢ from the prior week.
Another refiner offered cane steady at 43¢ a
lb f.o.b Southeast through 2021-22.
Corn sweetener contracting for 2022
continued at a mixed pace with most tolling
agreements concluded but annual flat
price business varying widely. Some buyers
had concluded 2022 annual contracting
while others were holding off in hopes of
smaller increases later in the year. Offers
appeared to be up $3 to $5.50 a cwt from
2021 contracted levels with the highest
offers for glucose and 55% high-fructose
corn syrup. FBN
