Nestle to invest $1.3 billion
in regenerative agriculture

will support farmers by co-investing with
them, facilitating lending or helping obtain
loans for necessary equipment. Finally,
Nestle committed to paying premiums
for goods produced using regenerative
agriculture practices.
" This means rewarding farmers
not only for the quantity and quality of
ingredients, but also for the benefits they
provide to the environment through soil
protection, water management and carbon
sequestration, " the company said.

approximately $1.3 billion over the next
five years to help its farmers and suppliers
transition to using regenerative agriculture
practices.
The world's largest food company
said its efforts primarily will focus on
three initiatives. First, Nestle will use its
network of research and development personnel
and agronomists to develop more
environmentally friendly crops and production
practices. Examples may include
higher-yielding coffee and cocoa varieties
with lower environmental impact and
assessing solutions to reduce emissions
in the dairy supply chain. Nestle also said
it will offer training and help producers
exchange information and best practices
that may be adapted locally.
Acknowledging the costs and risks

VEVEY, SWITZERLAND - All components within Nestle SA's North American operations - Nestle
USA, Purina North America, Nestle Canada, Nestle Health Science and Nespresso - are performing
well, leaving executives confident about the future of the business in the region.
Growth in the region may be traced back to a transformation that goes well beyond shifts
in the company's product portfolio, said Laurent Freixe, chief executive officer of Zone Americas.
" We changed our head office, " Mr. Freixe said. " We
changed distribution model for frozen food. We improved
our culture to have it more open connected and agile. So
transformation has really taken place across the board. "
Mr. Freixe said Nestle's priorities moving forward
are on supporting, enabling and fueling the growth in
the region that already has taken place. This strategy
implies investments, he said.
" There is no growth without investments - investment
in innovation, investment in manufacturing, " he
said. " One of our limitations short term is the tightness of
our capacity in some areas. So we have big CapEx investment plans underway.
" But also investment in technology, the shift to e-commerce, which we want to embrace
fully, just a data point that our No. 2, No. 3 customers for PetCare are pure players in e-commerce,
so that shows the importance of the e-commerce channel. And we want to be able
to embrace all of that being connected end-to-end from farm to fork. So that implies putting
in place supply chain control towers, planning control towers, transportation control towers
and so on and so forth, so that we are capable to manage in real time. " FBN

making up about half of that, according
to the company. Management hopes its
initiatives will help the company reach its
goal of halving its emissions by 2030 and
achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
" With our long-standing partnerships
with farming communities globally,
we want to increase our support for
farming practices that are good for the
environment and good for people, " said
Mark Schneider, chief executive officer.
" In the spirit of enabling a just transition
it is vital that we support farmers around
the world that take on the risks and costs
associated with the move toward regenerative
agriculture. "
Nestle's announcement Sept. 16 came
a day after PepsiCo, Inc., Purchase, NY,
announced a number of commitments
intended to help the company achieve
its sustainability goals (See Page 14).
Specifically, PepsiCo said it plans to apply
regenerative agriculture practices to land
mass equal to the company's agricultural
footprint, which is approximately 7
million acres.
Nestle and PepsiCo are not the only
major food processors emphasizing the
development of regenerative agriculture
practices. General Mills, Inc., Minneapolis,
has established a goal of advancing the
sustainable farming practices to 1 million
acres of farmland by 2030. Unilever PLC,
London, has committed to introducing a
Regenerative Agriculture Code for all suppliers
and working with partners to make
its product formulations biodegradable by
